Part 1 of extremely boring con report is here (I put it on cutaway because it's long as well as boring). For an entertaining con report, check out Shrift's latest.
I'm feeling very thickwitted this morning, and it is raining like stink here -- the first big rain of the season. The snow is gone at last, hallelujah. I have to go see if I can figure out where the hell I stored my umbrella back in November.
First stab at a con report, in topical rather than chronological order:
--The hotel: This worked very well, I think. We pretty much had the whole mezzanine level to ourselves, and took it over, with no non-fan incursions. The theatre, where the vid shows, play and banquet were held, was marvellous; it really helps to have a vid show in a setting with a big screen easily visible to all. Some people had problems with their rooms, which seems inevitable at cons--the most common complaint I've heard is about people not able to get towels. I must be the only person who had towels delivered, unasked-for, to her door, at 2:45 a.m. (Fortunately, I wasn't asleep, having just collapsed after a long fascinating conversation with Taz, brain buzzing with story ideas which I wasn't smart enough to get up and jot down, in the blithe conviction I'd of course remember them all the next day, which of course I didn't. Alas.)
What was especially cool, in an odd way, about this hotel was the location; it's splat in the middle of the Travel Plaza, and is joined at the hip with the local Greyhound station. Which meant there was all kinds of interesting and wildly non-fannish truck-stop/Greyhound ambience right at hand, and there was also plenty of fast food just steps away. My only requirements for con food are (a) fast, (b) cheap, (c) close at hand, and (d) available at odd hours, so this was great.
--The people: Like last year, I mostly hung with what I've come to think of as the Due South Posse, and we regularly monopolized tables in the mezzanine lobby area and babbled and hooted like a cluster of bonobos. Unlike last year, there was no drunken singing in the small hours (in fact, I don't think I've ever drunk less at a con). Marvelous bonding with people I greatly dig, a smart funny raucous crew.
--The panels: I didn't go to a huge number of panels, and my general sense of them was that they were more about the sharing and the bonding than the sharp provocative debate, which is fine. The blog panel, which Devon and Beth H. and I moderated, was far more genial than the Escapade version, but also produced some interesting conversation, which mad poetess
has summarized very well. Afterwards, several of us were smoking and talking outside the hotel (for some reason, a lot of my best con conversation occur in the impromptu smoking lounge) and the point was raised that the possible (probable?) demise of free Yahoogroups mailing lists might give blogs/LJs an even more significant role in fannish conversation, if they become the chief alternative to majordomo-type lists.
The writing workshops, which I moderated, went fairly well, I think; at least, people said nice things to me afterwards. It's always frustrating to try to do these workshops, though; they work best when one can get specific and concrete, talking about actual stories, actual examples, but in a multi-fandom con there's nothing that *everyone* has read, and time is too limited to get into having people share their own actual work. And defaulting to bland generalities--it's good to get stuff beta'd, characterization matters, etc.--is unsatisfying. So it's always a balancing act, and every year I think I'll figure out a way to do this better.
There was a panel on fannish pseuds and The Matter of Names, which I found fascinating; I always love hearing stories of how people chose their screen names, how they identify with them, how they use them to distinguish their fan-selves from their RL-selves. I blathered a bit about the way that "Kat Allison"--which is really just something I grabbed in haste five years ago--has become a construct that identifies a persona who both is and is not me; who's recognized, and to whom at times is attributed a bunch of qualities, based on stuff I've produced but don't entirely feel ownership of. If that makes any sense. Kat lives in the magic box of the computer, and the electro-neural network of the internet, but when I go to cons she and "I," real-life "I," merge in some odd way.
There was a Highlander panel on "Cracks in the Canon," which I enjoyed--god, it's been so long since I've sat and talked Highlander with other fans--and a due South panel, which was enjoyably free-ranging and loose-jointed. The ostensible topic of post-CotW fiction brought up a number of comments which I'm pondering in relation to the goddamned WIP, which is a post-CotW freakin' epic, so apart from the fun of the whole conversation, I got some stuff that I'll hang onto and think about.
--The vid show: OK, I'll talk about this later, because I want to write up a post for the Vidder list on it, and that will take me some time and brainpower, neither of which are in great supply at this particular instant.
