Thursday, July 25, 2002 Had a wonderful couple of days with Aral visiting--basically 48 hours of intense conversation, with interludes of sleep. We watched vids, we watched episodes (hitting the "pause" button every few minutes for much discussion), we went swimming in Lake Harriet, we cooked and noshed, but mostly we talked--story ideas, characterization debates, fandom gossip, family histories, cats, politics, sex, blogs, food, literature, careers, movies, and back to what the boyband deal is all about and what's your favorite dS story. It's a joy to spend time with someone who has both a high level of lively critical intelligence and a lot of unselfconscious, unembittered, unjaded, enthusiastic love for fandom. And while I dig the more promiscuous flitting-hither-and-yon socializing at cons, it's also a joy to have lots of low-pressure hanging-out time with a friend. So -- mood: buoyant. Batteries: recharged. Plan: get productive. Write. Finish stuff. Posted @ 10:01 AM CST [Link]3 comments Sunday, July 21, 2002 Now HOLD it just a razzlefrazzle minute. bettyp is Hth?!? JEEEEBUS. Who knew? (Well, maybe everyone. I'm generally the last to catch a clue about such things. Cue Blind Lemon Kat singin' the blues: Waitin' at the station, for the Clue Train to roll on down the track / Lord, I'm waitin' at the station, for that Clue Train to roll on down the track / But it done left an hour ago, child / and it ain't a-comin' back ... ) I only figured this out when I was reading through her recent entry, a fannish survey thingie, and came across: First fanfic you've ever written? This is the second time I've copped to this recently. It was called "The Lover," and it's actually a set of conjoined POV pieces, Scully, Krycek, and Skinner's perspective on Mulder. And I made a little ooolp!ing noise, because man, do I remember that story. She refers to it self-deprecatingly as "quite slooshy, since I was deeply in love with Mulder at the time," but dude, so was I, and that story got right in amongst me. As has all of Hth's work, really. When I can freakin' find it, that is. I kind of think of her as the ivory-billed woodpecker of fandom, lovely and elusive. Her webpage has gone through several changes of address, and has disappeared completely from time to time, leaving me forlorn. It's currently nesting here, but much to my grief, her marvellous essays no longer seem to be up, nor do some of her stories (like Three Kings, a wonderful part of her Ray/Ray series). So anyway. How very cool to find her again. I hasten to add that I have no problems with anyone maintaining multiple identities within fandom (except for malicious sockpuppets or people seeking to conceal multiple repeat offenses against basic norms of conduct). In fact, I kind of dig the "aha!" moments when I (always belatedly) figure something like this out. And I must now close down and depart in search of someplace air-conditioned where I can park for the day. Yesterday brought us an amazing bout of suffocatingly sticky heat, and I consoled myself by checking out the weather report for New Orleans and noting that at least it was worse there. Today, however, is forecast to be just like New Orleans was yesterday, heat index nudging 110. Yikes. Posted @ 09:01 AM CST [Link]4 comments |
